Death Metal: Are We Watching You Die?

"Death, thou too shalt die" does not seem to be a fitting statement for death metal.  In this two-hour documentary, which is not targeted for beginners or outsiders, many exalted artists expound on a variety of subjects.

To some people, black metal is considered to be an enemy sect.  That is why members of Marduk, Mayhem (Attila), and Cradle of Filth were invited to participate in these discussions.

Although Death Metal can boast having many bands that stay true to the original methods, many artists fuse other elements and re-shape the boundaries (while still remaining in the realm of death).  Bands like Septic Flesh (from Greece) and Shape of Despair (from Finland) have pushed the limits and have achieved astounding results.  The fact that the death metal has been hybridized but still identifiable as "death metal" after all these years means that it was NOT a passing trend, and indications are that the form will continue to exist, lest the enemies of all music (theft of songs) cut the bands down (a topic that is debated in the DVD).

Of course, a documentary about death metal must also include Cannibal Corpse - George Corpsegrinder Fisher provides a lot of insight.  Other traditional death metal artists who appear are Krisiun, Amon Amarth, and Atrocity.

Sadly THEATRE OF TRAGEDY represent the kind of band that used components of death metal but then utterly abandoned it.  Liv Kristine tells the tale.

Most bands were also filmed while performing on stage - and you will be treated to some exlusive clips.  In addition to this, a diverse assortment of music-video clips have also been provided.  Brutal Swedish Death Metal (Deranged), Grindcore from Poland (Haemorhage), Grind from Japan (Bathtub Shitters), and the unusual stylings of Immolation add visual balance to the interviews.

There is no sensationalism in this documentary.  It's for people who appreciate the music, not the hype.  In fact, hype is somewhat destroyed by the artists.  Enjoy a full two hours with some interesting personalities.

BONUS MOVIE !!! Bill Zebub filmed an experimental movie about four white supremacists - one of them died and somehow came back from the dead as a negro, and the other three white supremacists had to tolerate him until they figured out how to restore their friend.  The movie was only replicated for a year.  Bill Zebub felt that he had gathered all of the data that he needed, and so he shut the movie down.  (It was an experiment, and the experiment was over).  As copies of the out-of-print movie circulated, Bill Zebub was asked to re-release it.  He always declined, explaining that the movie had run its full course.  It wasn't made to make money.  It was made to make explorations.  The journey was over.

Although there was no reason to resurrect the movie, Bill Zebub considered the idea from another perspective and decided that the film would fit very nicely as bonus material.  It was a very daring movie, and Death Metal is a very daring musical form.  People who watch the death metal documentary will have a proper mindset for the bold and experimental nature of "Spooked."  The only negative thing about adding this bonus movie is that people who don't care about death metal may buy the DVD just because it has the out-of-print movie.
