This is Bill Zebub's first "monster" movie, but as with his other interpretations of genres, "Night of the Pumpkin" is not typical or cliche. It was intended to be experimental from the very beginning..
"If you are expecting something akin to FRIDAY THE 13TH then you will be very disappointed." said Bill Zebub.
"I had an idea for a very short skit, more like a just a scene because I only had an image, not a story, of a scarecrow walking to its field, carrying he cross like we have seen the character Jesus do in movies. As I thought about it,, I wanted to make a pumpkin head for the scarecrow."
"The image wouldn't leave my mind, and I thought about how cool it would be to make a character like that for a full-length movie. Ideas sprang rather quickly about what a creature like that could be. How could something like that exist?"
"After I came up with the back story, which I can only reveal as a spoiler, I thought about how to present the story. If this were to be a slasher type of flick, I wanted to be as far from cliche as possible. Well, I have that attitude with every one of my movies, ha ha."
"I decided that the group of people whom you will see in the movie was to be more dangerous than the monster - to THEMSELVES, I mean. People who are confident are often percieved as intelligent. In a group situation, the confident people lead, but they are not necessarily the smartest of the bunch."
"Another horrifying quality about humans is that they are not logical by nature. Humans actually have to be TRAINED to be logical. This mental weakness is another non-cliche danger that I incorporated into the story: I don't mean that a human is retarded. Quite a lot of smart people are not logical. For example, most people are of the incorrect belief that in order to prove something you must find evidence to support your case. This isn't bad on the surface. But the logical way to prove something is to attempt to disprove it. You can spend a year of gathering evidence to support your statement, like "ALL BILL ZEBUB MOVIES ARE FILMED IN NEW JERSEY" but it is actually easier to find the shot that was filmed in Brooklyn NY to disprove that statement. Maybe that's an overly simple example, but you'll see the reasoning flaws of some of the characters in the movie. To add to the befuddlement, each character has beliefs that taint the reasoning, like the born-again christian, the eco-friendly person, etc."
"I also wanted to make strong female characters. But I didn't do what film-makers usually do - when they want a woman to be strong they give her masculine traits. I made the female characters strong using only feminine traits."
"So that takes care of the cerebral parts. There's plenty of visceral stuff too, like gratuitous nudity and gore, sometimes in the same shot. There is also some comedy, but it's a different flavor than what I usually write. "
"I may divulge the spoilers here at a future date, but for now I am saving that for the short making-of" in the DVD"
